It feels good to give, and most people would agree that giving to others is a good idea. But did you know it can also improve your mental well-being?
“From celebrating old traditions to the stress of the holidays, this time of year can conjure up a number of feelings. Our health often hinges on our experiences and studies show when we give gifts or our time chemicals are released from our brains that make us feel happy. And these feelings often exceed the happiness we feel when we receive gifts,” said Dr. Robert Duhaney of Internal Medicine of Addison, a Texas Health Physicians Group practice.
So for the next 12 days we are taking Dr. Duhaney’s advice and giving back this holiday season all while making us feel good. Join us as we kick off our #ShareTheSpirit challenge — a 12-day challenge keeping us focused on what matters.
“When we give to others, we reinforce our feelings for those whom we love. It lowers our stress and that makes us feel good because we care. This is an important part of well-being,” said Dr. Duhaney.

Day 2 – Adopt a family in need
Day 3 – Deliver hot chocolate to a neighbor
Day 4 – Reconnect with old friends
Day 5 – Spend extra time with your four-legged friends
Day 6 – Bring holiday treats to share with work friends
Day 7 – Share your favorite Christmas photo from years past
Day 8 – Host a game night for family and friends
Day 9 – Go Christmas caroling in your neighborhood
Day 10 – Send a real letter to a friend
Day 11 – Smile and say hello to a stranger
Day 12 – Do one small random act of kindness
